Hahaha, <3.

I invented a drink called a Mad Dog Black, in honour of our dear departed canine:

1 oz Bourbon, Scotch, or Whisky, depending on preference
1/2 oz Amaretto
1/2 oz Frangelico
1 oz Kahlua
1 oz Absinthe, if it is legal in your country of residence, or NyQuil, if it is not.
Pour over ice, top with cola to taste, and garnish with an orange wedge.

It tastes a bit like maple syrup, only violently alcoholic!

I'm (obviously) more of a fruity guy, but Jahdi is BIG on maple flavor, so I'll have to show that to him.

We could have a wake, and be dorky.

Heee. It was inspired by this scene in Of Silver where Bernard and Blanche (my Werewolf Sue) think Sirius is dead in Egypt, and they toast him with a drink Mme. Rosmerta has created in honour of the wrongly-imprisoned-hero-turned-auror. I experimented for quite awhile trying to create the exact flavour I had described in the fic. And as a result I got shiiiitfaced after hours at the bar where my flatmate worked at the time.

Isn't Absinthe like pure alcohol, and is illegal in USA? And isn't it really lethal if you drink a lot of it? Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

Little known fact: NyQuil is absinthe flavoured. So that green death flavour? That's what absithe tastes like. And it is illegal in the U.S., lethal in high doses, and makes you hallucinate of you drink a little less than would kill you... Fun stuff.

Yeah, that's pretty dumb. Not saying people deserve to die if they drink that, but they have it coming to them. >=\

Actually it's not quite as bad as that. Absinthe became legal in the UK about 3-4 years ago, while I was still in uni, and as uni students we all had to try at least some.

The usual bottle is about 70-80% volume (remembering that even 100% volume is only half of the content being alcohol) and does indeed taste of aniseed. You're meant to burn it over sugar before drinking (as Sarah knows because we did it while she was here!) and the fumes are potent. As with anything though it's to be done in moderation. If you drink too much it just makes you drunk, just like any other alcoholic substance, albeit slightly quicker than other stuff.

I think there was a time in mainland Europe when people might hallucinate etc on it, but that was a long while ago and due to it being all black market and so no one regulating what went in along with the alcohol.

You can buy an Absinthe substitute here in the US. I was a bartender at a local goth/industrial club here called Laga, and they had a house recipe called Ambrosia For Two that called for an Absinthe substitute. It was a hi-proof anisette-like drink, I think.

Although it might be funny to add NyQuil to something I drink. Cold supressants tend to make me really wonky.

I'm against it really anyway, but more on the basis that aniseed is possibly the most disgusting flavour anywhere any time, but the burning it off is fun. :D

No, the most disgusting flavor ever is tomato juice.

Bloody Mary? More like bloody nasty.

I believe you meant "100 proof is only half of the content being alcohol". 200 proof is pure alcohol, which is 100%.

[info]airinshaw

April 26 2004, 23:00:40 UTC 8 years ago

Yeah, pretty much. Here we use "percentage by volume", which is weird, and gets shortened to "40%" for example. So people tend to think that somthing that is "70%" means that 70% of it is alcohol, but the "by volume" bit means it's only 35% of the content.

*blinks* All of which you said. *grins* I'm tired.

Yes, what *you* said! Either way, Absinthe is just a bizarre concept, eh? Goodnight, Lady...

Wow. I almost wish I were a drinker, just so I could try some of these! *is such a teetotaling wuss*

Figures you'd post these during the UPenn Spring Fling, where I am probably the only person on the entire campus sober. :D

I hate you. Why, why, oh WHY can't I be legal? Not even that. Why can't I be CLOSER to legal? Everything there sounds soooo good...

Ooooooh......*plans to try many many many.*

Very cool idea indeed! Did it take long to make all the recipes?

Now, to get some ingredients...

Cheers,

O

I did, indeed, make all of these recipies. Although a few of them are somewhat based on pre-existing drinks, but I've made changes to make them fit their names as well as possible.

IE: Loony Loopy Lupin is based on a simple chocolate rum, Southern Pansy is based on a Belle, Caribbean Sea is based on a Shark.

Very cute...

How much rum does that Why Is All The Rum Gone? call for? (It actually sounds foul to me, unlike most of the others, but I'm still curious. Might try to make a single serving to see if it's an unexpected positive combination)
